Introduction

With the Quechua name meaning “Golden Cradle,” the mysterious and dazzling Inca city of Choquequirao is located in the beautiful landscape of the Vilcabamba Range over the Apurimac River Canyon. Dense forest covered this Inca site for many years and has just recently been revealed. According to historians, Choquequirao was the dwelling of the last rebel Incas of Vilcabamba, and like Machu Picchu, the Spanish were thought never to have discovered it.
This route offers us a formidable trek across diverse ecosystems. We will enjoy beautiful views of the snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba Range, descending into the deep Apurimac Canyon and then ascending through abundant vegetation to the citadel of Choquequirao.

Day 1: Cusco / Cachora / Chiquisca.

We will pick the travelers up early in the morning from their hotels  ,then we will head to Cachora town . This trip will lasts approximately 3h30 min. At Cachora we will meet our horses and horse leader that will carry our camping equipment, food and a part of your backpack (5Kilos). At this point we can appreciate the Padreyoc snow covered .After that  we will start our hike toward Chiquiska , first we will walk for 2H:30min then we will have lunch at Capuliyoc pass  from this point we will be able to appreciate the deep valley of the Apurimac River .

Day 2: Chiquisca  / Playa Rosalina  / Marampata / Choquequiraw

After breakfast, we will continue walking down to the deepest point which is Rosalina beach then we will cross Apurimac river through a suspension footbridge , hereafter we are going to walk up we will take a breathe, then we will continue walking up approx 2 hours more to Marampata ,here we will have lunch ,after lunch we will walk for 1H 30 min to reach the archaeological complex of CHOQUEQUIRAO,,once reached this amazing place we will have a guided tour for the whole archeological place .

Day 3: Choquequiraw  / Santa Rosa  / Cocamasana

This day we will leave choquekiraw and go toward Cocamasana, place where we are going to acamp , we will walk for 3 hours to Santa Rosa, and continue to Rosalina beach where we will spend some time at the Apurimac river .then we walk up  to our campsite.

Day 4: Cocamasana / Cachora.

Early in the morning (6:00 )after breakfast, we will head to Cachora we will walk up for around 3 hours to Capuliyoc then 2h 30 min. more to Cachora where we will have lunch while then wait for our transportation that will take us back to Cusco (3h 30min.)

  • Transportation in and out: Cusco - Cachora - Cusco (private bus)
  • Ticket: Entrance fee to Choquequirao
  • Horsemen and horses: Carry tents, cooking equipment and also carry mattresses 
  • Guide: Professional English and Spanish speaking guide; 2 guides for groups over 12 people
  • Cook: In charge of meal preparation
  • Emergency Horse: Just in case someone needs help
  • Meals: 3 Breakfasts/4 Lunches/3 Dinners/Snacks and afternoon tea
  • Equipment: tents (2 people in each, 3-person-capacity), sleeping pad, dinner tent, biodegradable toilet tent, kitchen tent, tables and chairs, table settings, first aid kit, including emergency oxygen bottle

  • Breakfast (day 1), usually the hotels offer this service
  • Sleeping bag
  •  Tips for the guide, cook and porters

Extras:

  • US$12 Sleeping bag rental(-10°C) for the whole trek
  • US$15 Single tent accommodation

What you need to bring/carry: 

  • Personal Sleeping Bag
  • Flashlight
  • Hat
  • Sun block, sunglasses
  • Warm clothes, Light clothes, 4 pairs of socks
  • Insect repellent
  • Chocolates, candies or other snacks
  • Camera + Film/Video camera (optional)
  • Rain jacket or poncho (plastic ponchos can be purchased in Cusco for a few dollars)
  • Water bottle and purification tablets (Micropur are recommended and can be bought in local pharmacies in Cusco)
  • Toiletries, towel and toilet paper
  • Camera, plenty of film and spare batteries
  • You also need to bring your original passport on the trail.
